October 7, 2025. headed south.

The unmistakeable call of the Sandhill Cranes, who summer in the Lamoille Valley, has been heard each of the last several days.

The birds, who travel in pairs, begin circling the valley making their call for others to join. They circle for hours, gaining elevation and numbers. Yesterday there was a group of more than 200 birds that flew right over the lodge, then over the Ruby Mountains heading south for the winter.

It happens each fall, almost to the day, the first week of October. It’s always a sign for us that winter is coming.

It is as beautiful as it gets in Lamoille Nevada right now. A true combination of seasons with brilliant aspen colors extending to the upper elevations of the mountains and the first snow of the season above 9,000 feet.

Cold nights, mild days and the crisp fall air have overtaken the official end of summer.

The lodge “summer” season has another month, finishing November 1st.

After taking November off, we will be back for Holiday Dinners every Wednesday- Saturday in December through the first week of January, except for Christmas Week.

Year 49 of Ruby follows with guides and crew arriving the end of the first week of January.

It won’t be long now.
